NFSA Restores: Caddie

1h 48m • Drama, Biography, Romance, History • 1976

The freewheeling life of Caddie Marsh (Helen Morse), a suburban housewife-turned-city barmaid living through the Great Depression.

The NFSA presents a brand-new restoration of CADDIE (1976), a collaboration between director Donald Crombie and producer Anthony Buckley based on the anonymous autobiography Caddie, A Sydney Barmaid.

When life as she knows it collapses, Caddie (Helen Morse) goes from a young suburban wife to a working single mother caught between odd jobs, new suitors and the uncertainty of the Great Depression. Joan Long’s sensitive screenplay and Peter James’ lush cinematography conjure a 1920s world that feels both authentic and timeless.

This new 4K restoration was overseen by James himself and captures the gorgeous colour, texture and light of the 1976 film. Now, 50 years later, audiences can fully experience Buckley’s loving tribute to his home city of Sydney.
