The Irishman

1h 54m • Drama, Romance, Western, History • 1978

Paddy’s horse-drawn business is threatened when the arrival of the motorcar disrupts the rhythms of 1920s Queensland.

Two years after the sumptuous period drama CADDIE, producer Anthony Buckley and director Donald Crombie reteamed to capture the changing face of the Gulf Country.

In 1921 Queensland, a flashy, noisy and powerful invention has arrived. The automobile is already revolutionising the work of farmers – but draught-horse teamster Paddy Doolan (Michael Craig) digs in his heels. Sticking to hauling freight the old-school way, Paddy’s stubbornness soon puts his livelihood and his family at risk.

The tensions are brought to life by an ensemble cast of acting titans, including Robyn Nevin, Simon Burke and a young Bryan Brown. Based on the 1960 novel of the same name, THE IRISHMAN is another film that demonstrates Buckley’s excellent eye for bringing family-friendly historical adventure to the big screen.
