The Night the Prowler

1h 26m • Comedy, Drama, Satire • 1987

In this satirical black comedy, a terrifying experience transforms a young woman into a leather-clad renegade.

Three years after THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975) became a global sensation, Jim Sharman returned with an unabashedly Australian film. He asked his friend, Nobel-winning author Patrick White, to adapt one of his most daring stories for the screen.

Felicity (Kerry Walker) lives in an affluent suburban prison where the rules are clear: obey Mother (Ruth Cracknell) and marry. But after a prowler breaks into her bedroom, the family’s fragile veneer is shattered. Felicity transforms from victim to rebel and begins lying, breaking into houses and stalking the streets at night.

Anthony Buckley was the right producer to help realise Sharman’s rich vision on a lean budget. Combining social parody with dark satire and a touch of surrealism, THE NIGHT THE PROWLER uncovers the queasy perversion bubbling below the surface of middle-class morality.
